NPSAs one of the finest examples of the ecological and geological features composing our Nation's Natural History - Dismals Canyon was designated a "National Natural Landmark" in 1975 by the National Park Service - one of only 587 in the United States and its territories.

The American Village is a nationally pioneering civic education center. Our mission is to strengthen and renew the foundations of American liberty and self-government through citizenship education. We invite you to come back often, and we invite you to join us in this important work. Truly we are all entrusted with the preservation of that sacred fire of liberty
Everyday at The American Village children take on the role of George Washington, sit on an exact replica of the “Rising Sun Chair,” and preside at the Constitutional Convention. At the end of the Convention, Benjamin Franklin told fellow delegates he had often gazed at the half sun carved on the back of Washington’s chair and wondered whether it was rising or setting. After a long and difficult convention he was happy, he said, to affirm it was indeed a rising sun. Today our task is to help prepare a new generation of citizens who can by their knowledge, words, and deeds, ensure that the sun continues to rise for the future of our great Nation and for liberty and self-government which are its hallmarks.
